This is achieved using a cardiac monitor, connected to a cable lead and skin electrodes, which captures the electrical activity predominently through a single view (commonly lead II).

The monitor function includes:

• 3. The provision of rhythm strips to document evidence of arrythmia

Defibrillators are typically battery powered, but some can operate connected to an AC or DC power-line. The term defibrillation refers to the rapid delivery of electrical shocks, unsynchronized to the electrocardiogram, for the purpose of terminating ventricular fibrillation or other rhythms in which synchronization is precluded by either the urgency or lack of identifiable QRS complexes

The goal of pathology examination of tissue is to provide accurate, specific and sufficiently comprehensive diagnoses to enable the treating physician to develop an optimal plan of treatment. There are hundreds of varieties tumors, most with characteristic biology, that require accurate diagnosis by pathologists. Data on markers with prognostic and predictive significance are also routinely incorporated into pathology reports, allowing individualized treatment plans for patients. It is not only important to obtain sufficient tissue for a specific diagnosis of malignancy, but for many malignancies, additional tissue is required for prognostic and predictive ancillary studies.

The pulse oximeter is a small, clip-like device that attaches to a body part, like toes or an earlobe. It’s most commonly put on a finger, and it’s often used in a critical care setting like emergency rooms or hospitals. It may be used to monitor the health of individuals with any type of condition:

• 1. chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• 2. asthma
• 3. pneumonia
• 4. lung cancer
• 5. anemia
• 6. heart attack or heart failure
• 7. congenital heart defects

Breathing slowly with a spirometer allows your lungs to inflate fully. These breaths help break up fluid in the lungs that can lead to pneumonia if it isn’t cleared. An incentive spirometer is often given to people who’ve recently had surgery, people with lung disease, or people with conditions that fill their lungs with fluid.

BiPAP machines can also be used in emergency situations. In a flare-up of COPD symptoms, a BiPAP machine can take some of the load off a person’s breathing muscles and heart, allowing them to breathe more easily. It also boosts oxygen levels and normalizes carbon dioxide levels.

Critical care is appropriate for hospital patients of every age who are severely ill.
Patients may go to the ICU from the Emergency Department, or may move there from the general hospital ward if they become critically ill.
Examples of patients who need critical care includes those who undergo very invasive surgery or who have poor outcomes after surgery, those who are severely injured in an accident, people with serious infections, or people who have trouble breathing on their own and require a ventilator to breathe for them.

An ECG detects your heart's electrical rhythm and produces what's known as a tracing, which looks like squiggly lines. This tracing consists of representations of several waves that recur with each heartbeat, about 60 to 100 times per minute. The wave pattern should have a consistent shape. If your waves are not consistent, or if they do not appear as standard waves, this is indicative of heart disease.
There are a variety of characteristic changes that occur with different heart concerns, and your doctor can look at your ECG wave patterns to see if they are suggestive of certain types of heart disease.

Many doctors order an ECG as part of a yearly medical examination to screen for heart disease. This may apply to you if:

• 1. You have had heart disease in the past
• 2. You have a medical condition that predisposes you to heart disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, or inflammatory disease
• 3. You have other significant risk factors for cardiac disease

Doctors can also use X-rays to find an object that a child or adult swallowed. An X-ray can be used to check your lungs for signs of pneumonia or tuberculosis, to figure out why you have shortness of breath, or to see if you have heart failure.

The most common form of X-ray used is X-ray radiography, which can be used to help detect or diagnose:

• 1. Bone fractures
• 2. Infections (such as pneumonia)
• 3. Calcifications (like kidney stones or vascular calcifications)
• 4. Some tumors
• 5. Arthritis in joints
• 6. Bone loss (such as osteoporosis)
• 7. Dental issues
• 8. Heart problems (such as congestive heart failure)
• 9. Blood vessel blockages
• 10. Digestive problems
• 11. Foreign objects (such as items swallowed by children)

The oxygenator component serves as the lung, and is designed to expose the blood to oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. It is disposable and contains about 2–4 m² of a membrane permeable to gas but impermeable to blood, in the form of hollow fibers.[3] Blood flows on the outside of the hollow fibers, while oxygen flows in the opposite direction on the inside of the fibers. As the blood passes through the oxygenator, the blood comes into intimate contact with the fine surfaces of the device itself. Gas containing oxygen and medical air is delivered to the interface between the blood and the device, permitting the blood cells to absorb oxygen molecules directly.

A ventilator pushes oxygen into the patient’s lungs. If the lungs are badly damaged, high pressures and high levels of oxygen are required to maintain the oxygen levels in the blood. High pressure and high oxygen levels in themselves cause lung damage, so the injured lung becomes more damaged and the pressure needs to be increased further which causes yet more damage. ECMO breaks this cycle and allows the lungs to be rested while the body heals the damage. This is similar to the way that a plaster cast supports a broken arm whilst the bone repairs. Remember: ECMO does little to heal the underlying condition, it only provides support for healing to occur.
